Ophidiophobia (fear of snakes)
Talk to me about ophidiophobia.

I'm supposed to be moving to Arizona and it's full of the slippery, sinister, poisonous bitey cunts.

Cheezy

Sorry I stole this from an episode of QI. For example you shouldn't die from confined spaces...claustrophobia.

Re: Ophidiophobia (fear of snakes)
It's rational if you are in a place where they pose a danger. Some people are shit scared of sharks to the point of phobia, but they are easy to avoid.

Re: Ophidiophobia (fear of snakes)
A Phobia is supposed to be an irrational fear which seems strange as many snakes will cause you harm.

Leonard there are only 2 poisonous snakes in the world we know of. I think you mean venomous.

possibly it's the cottonmouth I'm thinking of. Got a distant cousin who amongst other things does house reservations around Ft Lauderdale and I thought it was both cottonmouths and fer de lances that he'd had issues with.

But having just done a bit of web-search you're probably right. Cottonmouths can also be a bit "mental" - he had a couple of stories of encounters with "mad, deadly venomous friggin' snakes"

Eggy

Legend has it St Chav of Giro was bitten by a snake on Sheppey and banished them from the island.

I know in Florida and Central America it's basically fer de lance snakes that are feared for this very reason.
_____________________________

Not sure about fer de lance in Florida, FFH. Not in my book of Florida snakes (and python was), never heard of one, and never heard any of my wildlife hunting/tooting/rooting friends ever discuss the species (one is a licensed Everglades guide with one of the very few permits that allows the transportation of live pythons, let alone dead ones - he is also a licensed python exterminayor. Also never saw a fer de lance mentioned in any literature either, including idiotic newspapers.

Very happy to be proved wrong though as I no longer live there. And that cottonmouth is a nasty creature, but beautiful if you like snakes, of course :) . That was the one snake I was truly afraid of. At least you could hear the rattlers.....

You don't get any of this pit viper nonsense if you holiday in LEYSDOWN.

You might get eaten by the locals, though.

wouldn't be at all surprised if there are adders on Sheppey tho, they're at both Rainham and Faversham just across thre water

That would have been one of those mad fer-de-lances

Won’t merely lie in wait for someone or something to Come within immediate striking range (as per the vast majority of ambush predators in the snake world) but will actively come after you.

When I lived in Georgia, we had the pest control man round to spray the garden, so the snakes didn't come in. Never saw one, so I guess it worked!
Also all the golf courses had warnings about snakes when retrieving balls from the creeks and rough.

Lived in and around northern Arizona in what was extended gap year (so a while ago) and spend time on the Navajo Reservation where they would be the most plentiful I would guess.

If you are actually scared, stay loud when you get outside your vehicle. That way you hear a lot but don't see many.

Re: Ophidiophobia (fear of snakes)
We went to Costa Rica on our honeymoon in March and were on a trip in the rainforest abseiling down some waterfalls.

I was half way down this waterfall and stopped at a platform where the guide swaps the harness over etc, anyway, as I got there we both looked down and there was a pit viper about two feet away hissing at us. I've never moved so fast in my life, I was at the bottom in about 4 seconds and the guide wasn't far behind.

He told me after that it was the most dangerous snake in Costa Rica, and that we were pretty lucky as they're very territorial.

Maybe this will help explain the difference between venom and poison. Once again the red-necked keelback (albeit a Thai one rather than a Hongkonger):

Re: Ophidiophobia (fear of snakes)
Rattlesnakes are VENOMOUS not poisonous.

You can eat a venomous snake, but not a poisonous snake.

However, it's not advisable to eat a poisonous snake.
